Background

Surfing for Earthquakes and Volcanoes is an interactive Website designed to introduce students to the concepts of how a caldera such at Katmai Mountain is formed.

 

Object

  1. The learner will develop an understanding of how a caldera is formed during a volcanic eruption.
  2. The learner will apply this understanding to the Novarupta eruption which formed the caldera at Katmai mountain.

Description:

The formation of a caldera is described in both Videos #1 and #2. After viewing, conduct the activity at the Internet site listed above. Go to the teachers page at the bottom to prepare the necessary materials in advance.

This activity is self explanatory once you go to the Internet site listed above. You can print out the student pages and prepare the necessary material in advance.

After the activity hold a discussion and refer to the video segment that tell about how the Novarupta eruption formed the caldera on Katmai mountain.
