Background

In areas that have many eruptions over a short time like the Hawaiian variety, lava layering becomes a interest to volcanologist. This activity shows you what happens when lava flow on top of each other.

Description:

The formation of a caldera is described in both Videos #1 and #2. After viewing, condut the activity at the Internet site listed above. Go to the teacehrs page at the bottom to prepare the necessary materials in advance.

This activity is self explanatory once you go to the Internet site listed above. You can print out the studnet pages and prepare the necessary material in advance.

After the activity hold a discussion and refer to the video segmanet that tell about how the Novarupta eruption formed the caldera on Katmai mountain.
