About Journeys to Living Laboratories
The Process of Scientific Inquiry

Join program producers OPEN, and the National Park Service and SERC, begin an exotic wildlife expedition in your classroom with Journeys to Living Laboratories! Transport your students, via the Web, to the natural world and guide them through the discovery process as they explore ecology, survival, and preservation.

Journeys to Living Laboratories is a six-part series of electronic field trips to locations where endangered species are being studied and protected. By utilizing scientific inquiry, middle school students will explore the question, "What factors influence an organism's survival?" The programs present the data and concepts that researchers and conservationists are using to track the challenges and progress of each species' survival.

Why Scientific Inquiry?
Scientists answer questions about the world we live in by formulating hypotheses and designing experiments to test them. Inquiry also refers to student activities that develop knowledge and understanding of science and scientists' study of the natural world.

Students who use inquiry to learn science engage in many of the same activities and thinking processes as scientists who are seeking to expand human knowledge of the natural world.

Through examples and discussions with scientists, Journeys to Living Laboratories shows how students and teachers across the curriculum can use inquiry to discover the nature of science and learn scientific content. Through this interdisciplinary approach, the teacher will be able to relate the series content to local scientific applications in the community.
