Journeys to Wilderness Canyons
Pre-Program Activities

The Journeys to Wilderness Canyons Electronic Field Trip consists of four parts that focus on the themes of wilderness, canyon geology, ecology, and the human impact and influences on a wilderness area.

The program is set in the Black Canyon National Park, Colorado, Petra, Jordan, Three Gorges, China and Valles Marineris, Mars.

Prior to taking part in the electronic field trip, it is suggested to orient the student to these unique geographic and geologic areas. Below are FIVE pre-program activities that the student can experience as part of the Canyons learning experience.

  • Canyons of the World The Passage of Time [Student Page] [Teacher Page] [Standards]
Suggested Age Level: Grades 6-8 Activity Type: Web Research/Writing/Oral Reports
Suggested Time: 1-2 days, depending upon time needed for research

Students will explore a common web site to learn how canyons are formed and their classification. They next form "expert groups" to examine a specific canyon and then report their results to the class.
  • Geologic Time The Passage of Time [Student Page ] [Teacher Page] [Standards]
Suggested Age Level: Grades 6-8 Activity Type: Teacher-directed Demonstration/Writing
Suggested Time: 1-2 days, depending upon time needed for research
Students will work through a short exercise to illustrate the methods scientists use to create the geologic time scale. They will participate in a demonstration of the creation of the geologic time scale and use metaphors of their own devising to illustrate their experience.

  •
  • Why Do We Have Dams? - A Web Tour [Student Page] [Teacher Page] [Standards]
Suggested Age Level: Grades 5-8 Activity Type: Deductive Thinking
Suggested Time: 2-4 days, depending upon Internet access

In this activity students will learn about the different kinds of dams, their societal uses and engage in a great simulation of how dams are built and where loads and stress occur.

  •
  • The Grand Canyon of Mars - A Web Tour [Student Page] [Teacher Page] [Standards]
Suggested Age Level: Grades 5-8 Activity Type: Deductive Thinking
Suggested Time: 2-4 days, depending upon Internet access

In this activity students will learn about the largest canyon in our solar system - the Grand Canyon of Mars. It allows for a great comparison to the forces that form canyons on earth.

  • Exploring Petra A Web Tour [Student Page ] [Teacher Page] [Standards]
Suggested Age Level: Grades 6-8 Activity Type: Web Research/Writing/Oral Reports
Suggested Time: 1-2 days, depending upon time needed for research

Students will form "expert groups" to examine different sites to describe how an ancient city, Petra, grew and prospered in a canyon valley
