One year after the tragic events of September 11th, in New York City and around the world, people continue to come together with a shared sense of purpose to fully understand and recover from what happened on that day.

It is important to stop and reflect about the time passed - important to remember the victims of the tragedy and their legacy. There are many good ideas and thoughtful visions about what should replace the buildings that collapsed and what type of Memorial should be built in memory of all those who perished.

It is our obligation to take an active part in this recovery process regardless of our nationality or religion. We owe it to ourselves and to humanity. By staying involved, we ensure that tragedies of this magnitude do not happen in the future. We make our personal contribution to the security and peace in the world.

On September 18, 2002, 9am - 10:15am (U.S. EST) Bridge Builders program hosted a live, 75-minute videoconferencing event from six selected schools in New York City, NY; Lexington, SC; Manchester, UK; and Athens, Greece. The main topic of the event were the September 11th one-year anniversary and the design of the WTC Memorial.

Bridge Builders is a semester-long videoconferencing and online initiative aimed at bringing together students from various countries in the world to work together to create a joint vision of the WTC Memorial.

Imagine you had the authority to decide what should be built as a Memorial on the WTC site. What would you want to build? What would you want to communicate? Students will work together as a team using online collaborative tools and following Memorial Design Instructions set up by the appropriate authorities. At the end of the semester students will meet again for an hour-long videoconferencing session at which time they will present their work.

After the international student team completes their design and their essay describing their design, if we can meet the as yet to be published official guidelines, this memorial design will be submitted as an entry in the official Memorial Design competition.
